With the recent trend in electric vehicles, it seems that most automakers are looking to capitalize. Mazda automakers are no exception, and that has us excited here at Sames Mazda, your Laredo, TX Mazda dealership.

Mazda models like the 2019 Mazda CX-5 are elegant and powerful, so the idea of adding an electric component to that is enticing. Luckily, we’ve confirmed that Mazda automakers plan to launch an electric vehicle in 2020 followed by a plug-in hybrid by 2022.

While both electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids aren’t exactly new, it’s refreshing to see an automaker taking their time to get the formula correct. The new additions come in part due to Europe’s emissions standards; however, it’s more than likely that the U.S. will see the fruits of these labors.

It’s still uncertain what kind of electric vehicle we’ll see from Mazda automakers, but it’s clear that the automaker is concerned with range. In an interview with Automotive News Europe, Mazda president and CEO Akira Marumoto gave a bit of insight into what we can expect concerning the engine and whether or not the automaker would use a rotary engine to recharge the battery. On the subject of a rotary engine, Marumoto says the “first application will be as a range extender for EVs.”

As for vehicles with a traditional gasoline engine, we’re all waiting to get behind a model with the new Skyactiv-X engine. Luckily, Marumoto said we’ll see a model with that engine this calendar year. Additionally, the new EV architecture will be an evolution of the Skyactiv-X technology.

While Mazda EV’s are on the way, there’s still plenty to get excited about right now. Visit our Laredo Mazda dealership, located at 6001 San Dario Ave to shop our current 2019 models for sale.
